19-21 Sept 08, Oakland (USA)

kastel08vsweb.jpg Oakland and San Francisco as the Bay Area, form the sixth most populous metropolitan area in the United States with a population with approximately 7.1 million people.

The final Meeting in the States came through in a relaxed and creative vibe, and in memory of the West-Coast-Legend Dream.

Oakland – Here the movement started back in the 60ies as a reaction of increasing Police brutality and segregation and then spread among the entire country. DSC00914.jpg

Originally the West-Coast-MOS was scheduled to happen in Los Angeles. But due to city-politics it was not possible to do it there. Read the mad story at the bottom.

oaklandsky.jpg

Old-Schooler Krash of the TDK-Crew, who used to go out to paint with Dream, then luckily jumped in with a nice nice wall near the famous Oakland-Train-Tracks.

oak08new.JPG The spot is located in the backyard of a storage place next to the Bart-line, the walls been painted years and years ago, with a huge production in memory of the legend Dream.
Through the years, sun and rain made the mural fade away, so the landlord decided to buff it and let it be repainted. oak08new2.JPG

The walls were primed, artists were ready to rock, so early saturday morning the event started with definition of wallspaces. By the time more and more artists came in so in the evening it was quite buisy

Fotoarchiv - 1534.jpg You got to know that Oakland, San Francisco and the Bay-area have a long history in Graffiti and Mural-painting as the area has always been a melting-pot for critical and creative minds.
Still up to these days a lot of legends are living around here, such as Mark Bodé, Vulcan, CrayOne and many more. Fotoarchiv - 1555.jpg

Raven MPC, Nate, Omen, Frame, Risky from LA, Charlie, Denz71 from Chicago, Dezi, KC, Stan153, Pose2 from NY & more to come Apex, Volcan, HydeOne, Daz & Poesia are just some names on the endless list of participants.

Fotoarchiv - 1504.jpg The walls were nice nice. With a total of approx 1000squaremeters they gave space for a lot of artists. During the day its been really chill.
People came around to meet and hang out, to sketch and chat or just chill. Lotof artists from all around the Bay-area, the Mid-West down to Arizona came to participate. Fotoarchiv - 1522.jpg

One has to question Gloria Molina’s sanity. That she would spend significant amounts of city money to paint over the Meeting of Styles murals in the Arroyo and at the end, cause problems for the 2008-edition.

la-grafheader.jpg…reportedly acting like a sexual hysteric over a very innocent green wood-nymph character by Asylm, and then wanting to charge it all to FOLAR (Friends Of The Los Angeles River), well, it’s certifiably bizarre behavior. She is having city authorities conduct a campaign that would make Stalin proud, threatening property owners with huge fines if they don’t paint over murals she hasn’t approved such as the beautiful murals of the Buddah at Western and Marathon featured in the L.A. Weekly. My understanding is that her hatred of art has come to a head, with enough response from business owners infuriated with her actions, that the city has put a moratorium on citations until a policy can be worked out. But don’t just take my word for it. Watch the following video at and keep in mind that Chairman Gloria had the mural painted out.

Seeing that she is also on a tear about Taco Trucks around the city, Vyal thinks she must be ashamed of having Mexican blood, and is therefore trying to wipe out any trace of that culture; no graffiti, no tacos. Perhaps she should legally change her last name to something as bland as she wants to make the whole city.

1465373593_a14b34f31e.jpg Our local organiser ManOne had a huge wall in Downtown LA with permission from the owner, with support from the Councilwoman, with sponsors,
but the City couldnt give approval because of the bullshit going on right now in the Dept of Building and Safety. If we had done the mural we had be fined $1,000 every day the mural is up until it is buffed. IMG_2479.jpg

What a complete disgrace, that this mural is gone…and all the great art that has been buffed over since the anti-public art/ graffiti movement began. I’m sure this city official,”Gloria”, hell of a name for such a person in charge of “justice” and peoples rights, is just like all the others, Money Talks and shes listening to nothing else. Keep the people dumbed down and out of open, public, free speech, and the power and control $ will be contained as well.
What to do about it ? This is like choping down a 300 year old redwood tree to make way for a coal plant.
    once its gone…it’s gone forever…
and such is life. Paint another and another and another… but don’t have a clue really, on how to get ride of the opposition like “Gloria”.

    what to do about it?

Just like Martin Luther King, Gandhi, Jesus it is sometimes okay to break an unjust law to arouse the community over its injustice. Just make sure to do it in a open loving manner.

So as you paint what we consider muralism and the officals consider vandalism, make sure ur subject matter in in accord with the current academic state. Make sure you actually utilize your skills at being able to communicate visually. What is the message your work communicates? are ordinary ppl able to appriciate it? a message that gets ignored by the general public and elevate your mind to a state in which you can philosophize about what you paint.

If you paint shit about always racking and sexy bitchs then the public isnt gonna give your work respect. Because although you may have great talent at creating visually dynamic images the images you paint appear to degrade the “quality of life”

Its public space and although a relatively narrow minded chick gloria may be and has no right to deface our art. We still have to share the space with the public. We cant just paint whatever the fuck we want. If we do so we are just becoming the same tyrant we hate so much.

    what are “writers” about?

    painting whatever we feel like?
    racking?

    or freedom, equality, peace?

how does L.A.’s work reflect you reasons for writing?

  • 3 yohz // Jun 2, 2008 at 12:41 pm

they destroyed the murals from last years event but maybe L.A. should come together as a whole and show the public what art really is and take responsibly for our role is the destruction of art? And if the work gets buffed again, lets get petitions going or do whatever is neccessary by any means to continue to arouse the community over the injustice that the city is doing to the artists of L.A. and also utlize our skills to enlighten ordinary people about other unjust activites our government is involved in all over the world.

Show the public why our art should rock and not superficial billboards or no moral/ civil value!

  • 7 kUSHIMONZ // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:17 am

Gloria Molina, Antonio Villaraigosa, Jose Huizar…if you see a Spanish surname you would think…Alright ! They will have our backs.
BULLSHIT>>In order to keep the power they have, they had to sell their soul to the devil. To erase a mural that tells a story all too common in the faces that walk throughout Boyle Heights and later to expect their respect…que cabrones.

  • 8 yohz // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:58 pm

Public space belongs to everyone. Not just corporations and politicans. Not just writers and in their eyes “gangs”.

Public space belongs to everyone. If our art degrades society then they are going to buff. Erasing buddha does make us have to question glorias sanity, but we gotta show the world why our shit should run. Take responsiblity over our visual communitcation/art.

She a hypocritc, lets lead by example and show her why her actions are wrong. Put an end to the cycle of disrespect.

  • 9 yohz // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:04 pm

Lets show gloria what the real voage of discovery consists of. Let show her what writers really might be. Legitament artist with a sincere care for public space and or visual voices for the city of boyle heights and the entire l.a. county.

Maybe writers are something more than thugs.

If we are just gang bangers banging on the system. Why would the system not bang back on us. The entire lifestyle of gangs in la is completely dependant on the american way of life. THe only way they will listen to Anahuac is if we lead by virtue.

  • 21 Richard // Sep 18, 2008 at 5:45 pm

I think part of the problem is public perception. Often times, graffiti is seen as a nuisance due to tagging wars that rarely ever show any thought. However, if a graffiti artist gets permission by the owner of whatever they’re painting on, it shouldn’t be an issue, particularly if there’s obvious thought put into the piece and it reflects the culture of the community; giving back to the community instead of taking something from it, as with gang taggings.

Let me add, it’s sad that the MOS piece was painted over just because it wasn’t approved by Ms. Molina. She seems like the same kind of person that would drape a cloth over one of those old Roman nude statues. Art is a creative process and it’s only hindered when it’s not allowed to flourish and grow.
